You might wonder if my mind is always filled with imagined underwater worlds of merpeople in their magical grottoes, but the name Merwishes comes from a surprising source. My (very talented) baby brother could not say my name when he was learning to speak, so he called me Mer. A name that was used for many years by my family; perhaps that started my magical journey at an early age. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and minored in art history, specializing in French Impressionism at Missouri University - Columbia. My path has been a varied one; I have worked for a desktop publisher, illustrating medical textbooks; and thrived as a toy designer, both as a concept designer and with engineering drawings. I had an opportunity to work with amazing actors as an assistant stage manager and did some stage design, as well. I have illustrated twelve science books for young adults and two biographies, through Enslow Publishing.
In 2018, my husband Paul Daly and I were featured in the Gallery of Contemporary Art at the St Louis Community College: Wildwood. It was a retrospective of our illustrations in an exhibition called Daly Fantasies: The Dinosaur Dramas, Daring Adventures and Enchanted Dreamscapes of Paul and Kimberly Austin Daly.
Currently I am exploring new ways to combine my love of history, ocean life and science with my love of storytelling, through the comical penguins named Peri and Blue. I want to encourage others to look for the best in themselves... wishing for my art to brighten everyone's life, so that they can thrive and be happy.
